PAYWIT NEWS      May, 2009.

It is safe to say that things did not go exactly to plan last season.   We think that the mares must have known something about the forthcoming terrible summer weather because we ended up with just the one Pure Bred Arabian foal.   A very nice one.   Cameo Seraphina produced Paywit Silver Halo on 16th January.    Diamond Moonlight had been scanned in foal, but did not produce.    She had been covered by Fenwick Silver Star.

The Nickel Bronze experience was sad.   He passed away here late February from a heart attack.  We were devastated, he had just turned 20 and he was a wonderful old gentleman.    We were greatly privileged to have him with us.  It appears that he suffered chronic arthritis in his near side hind leg through most of the joints and was mostly unable to serve mares.  There was but one foal conceived, this being a superb filly for Sarah Dyson out of  her India Fair (Fenwick Fadil ex Indian Dove*).    We had leased him to run with our group of maiden mares - who apparently are (sadly) as good a maids as they were 12 months ago.   But at least they have encountered a stallion, and this should see them in good stead for what comes next.   At this stage, we are unsure of “what comes next”.

Nickel Bronze was replaced in the paddock in 2008, at the last moment, by his grandson Paywit Raining Diamonds (Fenwick Rasindh ex Te Ackeroa Park Silver Raine).    He has had a charming small group of mares and it will be interesting to see what he has managed later this year.   We don’t think we will be putting him out again, with those beautiful unblemished legs of his.

Fenwick Silver Star has covered a beautiful group of mares this year.   The season began very late, with the mares not cycling for some reason, until the hot weather of early 2009.   We certainly won’t count our chickens before they hatch after the last couple of years, however we do hope for some interesting Arabian foals this year.

During the terrible weather of February, when the fires were so close and with the ongoing tortuous 40 degree heat, Fenwick Fahtan succumbed and we needed to put her down.   She was by Fabulous out of Fascination (by Shafreyn*) and was owned with immense pride.   She was 25.    Paywit will never be the same without her.

We are still at a loss of what to do with those huge Rasindh mares, still needing a paddock stallion.  Mrs. Byrnes no longer being able to hold big mares for service due to her illness.  We had considered leasing a stallion from Queensland, but he too is rising 19 hence we are a bit wary after what has happened with Nickel Bronze.    We are considering running Paywit Star Shadow with these mares - and seeing what happens.   He is by Renasar out of Fenwick Starstruck by Fenwick Rendevous.   This will be an interesting cross with Rasindh’s daughters out of Ennerdale Galaxy - I wonder if we will get any amazing white markings similar to Fenwick Orion.   Orion is out of our mare Ennerdale Galaxy whom we leased to Fenwick.   Orion is by Renasar.

The Shetlands have been increasing.   We got three foals in 2008, two beautiful fillies by our piebald stallion Burrabong Warren.   We are being introduced to the puzzle of genetics with Camvic Frazzle, a loudly coloured piebald, producing a jet black filly without a shred of white, sired by Warren who is equally as spectacularly marked.    Her name is Paywit Dazzle.     Aakina Millicent produced an unexpected glorious colt foal, a magnificent piebald by Kay Marchant’s magnificent Corinley Toy - a posthumous foal.   We had no idea Millicent was in foal.  He is gorgeous and we are looking forward to getting him out to some shows later this year.   This colt can be seen haring across the horizon of the hill, flat out, and I can’t help but think of my old childhood hero The Cisco Kid, who’s horse I loved.   Hence we have Paywit Diablo.      Sadly the third foal, Paywit Annabelle, a beautiful little skewbald filly out of Fenwick Amethyst was lost to suspected snakebite at two months.     We were devastated to find Amethyst dead in the paddock in February, apparently from snake bite herself.   She had a pedigree that was close to our hearts and was the most gentle little mare.  She deserved a kinder fate for both herself and her little one.

Warren had two outside mares last year, and served quite a number of our own little mares.   The bossy Fenwick Marushka, who has survived Warren’s inexperienced attentions for the past two years, appears to have been mastered this year.    She is the dam of our colt, Paywit Maximus (by Fenwick Whistle) who we have taken to a couple of shows, with Champion Colt at Glengarry.

There are a couple of new Shetland mares, as it appears we cannot resist these.   A group of new Pentland ponies.   A Musk Lavender filly, a pretty dun.    A couple of wee palominos.  An intriguing black mare from the Mill Park Stud of  Danielle Neilson.   We purchased Pentland Blue Popsey from Pentland shortly before Mrs. Betty Myers passed away - she was a most beautiful lady and we felt that we must own one of her blue roans that she had such pride in.    We love the Pentland ponies, they are so lovely to handle and of such intriguing bloodlines.     We are very interested in the “L” line from Fenwick, and the Pentland Stud has a strong family from this line.

The beautiful black mare Thorpeville Dirani visited Sandy Leggett’s little stallion Jildon Dice.  Dice has produced some outstanding progeny and we are looking forward to Dirani’s foal.   She is by Lerwick Auburn, who I admired deeply when we visited Lerwick some years ago.   She has a double cross to Rodney of Marsh wood (imp.) and she is a most elegant lady.

We will have an addition to our Shetland stallion line up towards the end of the year with the purchase of Lerwick Rodney (Aakina Supreme ex Fenwick Gretal).    He is palomino and white skewbald, we had seen a couple of his foals at Kay Marchant’s Aakina Stud in Winchelsea and admired them very much.   In the old tradition of Dorothy acquiring the occasional secret horse - Nicky doesn’t know yet.  (Shhhh).

Nick has been showing two of our young shetlands, Paywit Maximus and Paywit Lola, both black and white.   Max has done very well.    Lola has been a tad naughty.   We are looking forward to showing these ponies again this forthcoming season.    With the addition of Pentland Golden Nimble who escaped accompanying us during the past season, by injuring her eye.

We expect to close our Arabian Stud in the next couple of years.  Our interest remains in seeing some matings we have been looking forward to over the years.

PAYWIT NEWS    18 August 2008.

We have purchased two mares most recently, Diamond Moonlight (Silver Somerio ex Fenwick Tabashin) and Dark Allure.  Diamond Moonlight is in foal to Fenwick Silver Star, whilst Dark Allure will be served by him this current Stud Season.    We are particularly thrilled to own both of these beautiful mares.   Dark Allure has been leased here for some time, and we are very thrilled to have been able to purchase her, she is by Boomori Finale and out of Fenwick Rulana by Phantom.   Diamond Moonlight had been here visiting Silver Star, and we fell very heavily.   Most grateful to Felicity and Taylor Connell that we have been able to purchase her.

We have leased Cameo Seraphina from Sarah Dyson, we just love Seraphina and very pleased to have her.  She is in foal to Silver Star for this coming season.   Seraphina is by Royalund Sparkling Silver out of Cameo Silver Sky by Somerled.   Katrina Phillips of Tasmania has leased Anna’s Duette to us, and we are very thrilled to have her for a foal.  She will be served by Silver Star this current season.    Anna’s Duette is a beautiful bay mare by Boomori Kahlua  out of  Fenwick Winnatt.   I have long been a staunch and avid admirer of Winnatt, we are thrilled to have the opportunity of having  Ruby here.

Nickel Bronze (Nickel Silver ex Bronzia by Bronze Tone)  is to stay another season, he will turn 20 in January.   Camille Rogers kindly leased him to us so that we could progress with our ever increasing group of maiden mares, caused by the death of Fenwick Rasindh and the fact that many of our older mares were not over keen on being served by Silver Star, for reasons known only to themselves.   Nickel Bronze has done very well by the looks of things, he is expecting several very exciting foals.   Fenwick Fahtan (Fabulous ex Fascination), aged 25, looks to be in foal, as do her daughters by Sardonyx and Fenwick Rasindh.

We are expecting two foals by Fenwick Silver Star, and we will serve four or five of our own this year.

The Shetlands are expanding.  Several new mares, and with three foals due to arrive by our stallion, Burrabong Warren, as well as perhaps one by Kay Marchant‘s gorgeous late stallion, Corinley Toy.   We went off to the Thorpeville Reduction Auction in April, and came home with three lovely little mares.   Aakina Millicent arrived recently from Kay Marchant’s stud in Winchelsea and most recently, Lerwick Panda from Les Pratt (and his dear late wife, Marge) in Alexandra.     We purchased Thorpeville Inga from Les and Marge last June, and she produced a very naughty, beautiful, black filly by their beautiful old stallion, Glen-dara Titian.

We have a new Thoroughbred mare, another fascinating grey.   She replaces our much loved Plush Heaven who passed away in March.

Paywit Royal Butterfly, our remaining Section A Welsh mare,  now belongs to Sarah Dyson, who is starting up a new venture with some beautiful Welsh Ponies.  Butterfly is in foal to Nickel Bronze for a 2008 foal.

Serene Remembrance is back home after being two years away, refusing to get in foal to Ray Roberston’s Kalem.   She was supposed to have organised a colt by Kalem for Ray to carry on with now that Kalem is old.  However, she missed us very much as indeed we missed her, and refused to settle away from home.   We are very happy to have her back, every thing seems back to normal now that Serene is home.  She has been very pampered all her life.   We are unsure who will serve her this year.   She is one of those lovely things to have in the paddock, nice merely having her.
